Home Senator Ted Cruz

As Solicitor General, Ted argued eight cases before the Supreme Court of the United States, and defended our freedom of speech, our right to keep and bear arms, and our religious liberty in courts across the nation. Following his service as Solicitor General, Ted returned to private practice, where he continued to litigate high stakes cases and argued his ninth case before the Supreme Court. On the same day that Cruz pitched Fox News on his plan for an electoral commission, he unveiled the plan to GOP lawmakers in Congress. While it was panned by some of Trump’s most loyal allies — and by some of Cruz’s advisers — the commission caught the attention of the former president, who tweeted in support of Cruz’s road map. On abortion, the Republican lawmaker has called the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision legalizing the procedure a “dark anniversary” but has not said whether he would specifically work to overturn it.

Cruz then returned to private practice briefly before launching his own campaign for the Senate. He initially appeared to be an underdog, taking on fellow Republican and Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst. But his ultra-conservatism won him the support of leading Tea Party figures like Sarah Palin and Rand Paul, who campaigned for him.

Government shutdown of 2013

Cruz joined the group, and he and his fellow Constitutional Corroborators gave speeches around Texas on related issues. A February 1 poll from the University of Houston showed that Cruz would win with 48 percent of the vote to Allred's 39 percent, if the two face each other in the next election. In a head-to-head matchup against Sen. Roland Gutierrez, another potential Democratic opponent, he would win 48 percent to 38 percent, according to the survey.

Audio of Cruz’s talk with Fox host sheds light on plan to challenge 2020 results

In 2018, Cruz faced a surprising Senate reelection battle from Democratic Congressman Beto O'Rourke, with many polls showing the incumbent holding a too-close-for-comfort lead. As a result, the Republican establishment rallied around Cruz, with President Trump holding a massive rally on his behalf in October. Cruz ultimately won approximately 51 percent of the vote on Election Day in November to earn a second term in the Senate. However, after losing the Indiana primary to Trump in May, Cruz suspended his campaign.

"From the beginning, I have said that I will continue on as long as there is a viable path to victory," Cruz told his supporters. "Tonight, I am sorry to say, it appears that path has been closed." After graduating from Princeton in 1992, Cruz continued his education at Harvard Law School. There he challenged the liberal ideals of lawyer Alan Dershowitz, one of his instructors.

However, after a poor showing in the Indiana primary the following week, Cruz suspended his campaign. By this time his relationship with Trump had become particularly contentious, and at one point Trump made the unsubstantiated claim that Cruz’s father was with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the latter assassinated U.S. However, Cruz later endorsed Trump, who was ultimately elected president.

If the commission found “credible evidence of fraud that undermines confidence in the electoral results in any given state,” then the state would then call a special session and recertify results, according to Cruz. Cruz added that he would have rather seen “these facts developed in a court of law” but goes on to cast doubt on the Supreme Court’s ultimate determination to reject the lawsuits filed to challenge the election Trump had lost. “Unfortunately the courts that heard these cases — we did not have a full and thorough consideration,” Cruz said. The following is a transcript of an interview with Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz that aired Sunday, November 21, 2021, on "Face the Nation." Lisa Desjardins is a correspondent for PBS NewsHour, where she covers news from the U.S.

A vocal advocate of a smaller federal government, he supported the abolishment of numerous agencies, notably the Department of Education and the Internal Revenue Service. He also proposed ending the corporate tax and introducing a flat tax. On social issues, he believed that states should be allowed to decide the issue of same-sex marriage, and he sought to limit access to abortions. Cruz began the primary election season by winning the Iowa caucuses in February 2016, and after March’s Super Tuesday, when primaries and caucuses were held in 11 states, he was second to Donald Trump in number of delegates. As Trump consolidated his lead over the next two months, Cruz sought to gain momentum by announcing in late April that if he became the Republican nominee, Carly Fiorina would be his running mate.

U.S. Senate

He was reelected in a close Senate race in 2018 against Democratic candidate Beto O'Rourke. In 2012, in his first attempt to win electoral office, he entered the race for the U.S. Cruz, who was popular within the Tea Party movement, ran to the right of the favoured Republican candidate in the primary and won in a runoff by a significant margin.

The Texas senator filed a bill blocking the president’s actions, which allow more undocumented residents to gain legal status, including the administration’s waivers for young people brought to the U.S. as children. Cruz argues that those actions encouraged increased illegal immigration. In addition, Cruz opposed the 2013 comprehensive immigration bill which passed the U.S. He denounced the bill as offering “amnesty.” One of his amendments would have tripled the number of border patrol agents and quadrupled their equipment. In 2003 Cruz was appointed solicitor general of Texas, becoming, at age 32, the youngest person to hold the post in the United States.

In the ensuing weeks Cruz advanced Trump’s repeated claims of voter fraud, though numerous court filings failed to provide evidence to support the allegations. During Congress’s certification of the results in January 2021, he was among a group of Republicans who voted to reject electors from several states. The proceedings were interrupted after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, but the challenge to the election ultimately failed. Kate joined Newsweek in 2023 from The Independent and has also been published in multiple publications including The Times and the Daily Mail. Cruz says in the recorded conversation that he successfully organized 11 senators to object to the electoral certification as the mechanism to establish a commission. Cruz was the first senator to object to the electoral college results, joining Rep. Paul A. Gosar (R-Ariz.) in challenging Arizona’s electoral certification.

The best thing about Ted’s experience on the Bush-Cheney campaign, by far, was meeting Heidi Nelson, who also worked on the policy team. On social issues, Cruz is pro-life and has stated his belief in “marriage between a man and a woman.” He opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. "Instead of a federal government that works to undermine our values, imagine a federal government that works to defend the sanctity of human life, and to uphold the sacrament of marriage," he said in a speech announcing his run for president. Cruz vigorously opposes any federal, state or local taxes for accessing the Internet, even though ending such taxes would cost his home state $358 million a year, according to the National Journal. The Texas senator strongly opposes “net neutrality,” which would block Internet providers from charging different rates or having different policies for different pieces of Internet content.

After graduating from Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Cruz pursued a career in politics, later working as a policy advisor in the George W. Bush administration. In 2003, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott appointed Cruz to serve as Solicitor General, a position he held through 2008. Senate, becoming the first Hispanic-American[2] to serve as a U.S. senator from Texas. In the Senate, he has taken consistently conservative positions on economic and social policy; he played a leading role in the 2013 United States federal government shutdown, seeking to force Congress and President Barack Obama to defund the Affordable Care Act.

The Texas senator also said he now wants to abolish lifetime appointment to the court and subject justices to periodic election instead. Cruz believes marriage is between a man and a woman and that states should define the term “marriage” for themselves. In 2013, Ted was sworn into the United States Senate, where he has been a passionate fighter for limited government, economic growth, and national security. Conservative politician Ted Cruz grew up in Houston, Texas, earning his bachelor's at Princeton University and going on to Harvard Law School. Cruz served as an adviser on the 2000 presidential campaign of George W. Bush and became solicitor general of Texas in 2003. Senate in 2012 with the support of the Tea Party and went on to orchestrate a governmental shutdown in opposition to Obamacare.

Cruz subsequently clerked at the Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals (1995) and then for William Rehnquist (1996–97), chief justice of the U.S. After entering private legal practice in 1997, he represented Congressman John Boehner in a lawsuit and did preliminary work for the Republican-led impeachment proceedings against Pres. In 1999, having become more active in Republican Party politics, Cruz went to work on George W. Bush’s presidential campaign, advising the candidate on matters of law and public policy. He served on Bush’s legal team before the Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore, which resulted in Bush’s election to the presidency. Cruz then worked in the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission. In the 2020 presidential election Cruz was a vocal supporter of Trump, who ultimately lost to Biden.

After the National Public Affairs surveyed 807 likely voters, Cruz is neck and neck with his likely Democratic opponent, Congressman Colin Allred. Each candidate is on 44 percent of the vote share; 12 per cent said they were undecided. The polling was conducted between February 6 and February 8, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

The 59-year-old actor and his daughter were last seen together in 2013. However, a Church spokesperson refuted all of Domingo's claims, calling them "fiction." “Every person is allowed to see their child if they wanted to. He chooses not to because she is not a Scientologist.” a spokesperson said. The teen daughter of Katie Holmes, 43, and Tom Cruise, 60, made sure to bundle up during a walk with her buddies. Though Suri kept a low profile, it wasn’t hard to tell she was the stars’ daughter. The comfy-chic outfit looked like it could have been plucked straight from her fashionista mom’s closet and her smile was just like dad’s.

He also is the father of two older children, Isabella, now 31, and Connor Cruise, now 29, whom he adopted with Kidman. But no such agreement probably applies to Cruise’s youngest child, Suri Cruise, from whom he’s long been estranged, Page Six reported. With Suri turning 18 on Thursday, she and her mother Katie Holmes should no longer receive the reported $400,000 a year Cruise paid as part of a divorce settlement. Cruise also agreed to pay Suri’s college and health care costs, Page Six added. Meanwhile, Suri joined her mother in fashionably distressed jean shorts as she carried a vintage-inspired white leather suitcase.

Katie Holmes Explains Why She Featured Her 16-Year-Old Daughter, Suri Cruise, in Her New Movie

She previously gave a rare insight into their bond in an interview with InStyle. Taking to Instagram, the actress shared that her film, Alone Together, will be shown at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. Katie Holmes recently shared how proud she is of her daughter Suri Cruise, who shows off her vocal skills in the opening credits of Holmes' new movie, "Alone Together."

The Hollywood star is incredibly protective of her only child and so didn't mark the occasion on social media, but the pair no doubt had a wonderful day celebrating. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment about the new film, which Holmes directed, the "Dawson's Creek" star said that her 16-year-old daughter sings "Blue Moon" during the credits and called her "very talented." Samantha Domingo, a former Scientologist who left the group in 2004, said to Us Weekly that Cruise is "not allowed" to have a relationship with his adolescent daughter since she is not a Scientologist.

"That shoot was so exciting for me — it was my first job," she told Yahoo. In the movie, Suri sings a cover of "Blue Moon," which plays during the opening credits of the film. Holmes told the outlet this will not be her daughter’s only on-screen singing gig. Katie Holmes had nothing but praise for her daughter Suri's singing in the new film "Alone Together," which was directed by and stars Holmes. "I hope she always does something on my films. I always ask her," Holmes told the magazine. "But both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects and you become a family with people."

Recently, Suri officially made her big-screen debut in an appearance in Alone Together, a romantic comedy that Holmes wrote, directed, and starred in. Suri sings “Blue Moon” in the film, which was released 25 years after Holmes made her own feature film debut in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm. It’s a cool full-circle moment and Holmes couldn’t be prouder of her daughter. Katie Holmes didn't have to look very far to find the right singer to croon the cover of "Blue Moon" that plays over the opening credits of her new movie, Alone Together.

"But both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects and you become a family with people," she says. "And it's this safe, beautiful, creative space. So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly." It was hard to miss that her daughter had a striking similarity to her actress mom in the early days of her career. For the first six years of Suri’s life, Cruise seemed to dote on his youngest daughter and enjoy being seen with her in public.

Katie Holmes Shares Why She Loves Working with Her 'Incredible' 16-Year-Old Daughter Suri.

While Suri looked like any other high schooler, mom Katie recently raved about her daughter’s stellar singing talents. The Dawson’s Creek star wasn’t playing favorites when she picked Suri to sing a song for her film Alone Together. Her long brown hair and gorgeous smile aren’t the only things Katie Holmes and ex Tom Cruise passed down to their lookalike daughter Suri Cruise. The 16-year-old also got a big dose of talent from her famous parents.

Suri Cruise, 16, looked like a true New Yorker while out and about with her friends in the Big Apple on Monday, Nov. 21. Holmes, who is famously private about her daughter, also spoke about her protectiveness as a mother. The youngster, whose dad is actor Tom Cruise, wore multiple small earrings and finished her look with a pair of white sneakers. Katie Holmes and daughter Suri Cruise toted cute bags of luggage as they prepared to leave New York City on Saturday. Suri seemingly returned to the spotlight in 2022 when she covered the song Blue Moon for the film Alone Together, which Holmes directed. "She actually did sing in Rare Objects, which is the film we did last fall," says Holmes of her third feature, a period drama based on the 2016 bestseller by Kathleen Tessaro that will be released on December 31, 2022. Mail newsletter to get other stories like this delivered straight to your inbox. The actress lives in a gorgeous home with her daughter, who she is incredibly close to.

"She gives you this incredible space between action and cut," Sturgess said of his co-star. Suri is their only child together, and Suri's parents opted to keep her out of the public eye for a majority of her childhood. Holmes, 43, stars in the newly released movie "Alone Together," and her daughter Suri Cruise, 16, joined her on the big screen. Suri celebrated her 16th birthday recently on April 18th, meaning she is now legally able to apply for a New York driver’s license. But from photos we’ve seen in the past she enjoys walking around the big city.

But Suri’s relationship with her father changed after Holmes reportedly “blindsided” him by filing for divorce in 2012. It’s possible that Suri may choose to stay silent about her famous father. For one thing, if she gave an interview or published a tell-all about him, she’d probably have to give up the mostly private life she’s been able to enjoy thus far. People credit a protective Holmes with trying to give Suri as normal life as is possible under the circumstances, while raising her in New York City. "What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her," the actor says of Suri. "I'm very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She's an incredible person."

Like Holmes, Sturgess is celebrating his own cinematic anniversary this year. Fifteen years ago, the British actor made his big Hollywood debut alongside Evan Rachel Wood as the star of Julie Taymor's 2007 musical Across the Universe, inspired by the Beatles's immortal back catalogue. There's a special connection that Holmes and Cruise share to "Blue Moon" as well. The director cites the 1987 Diane Keaton comedy Baby Boom as one of the influences on Alone Together, and is an avowed fan of all things Keaton in general. Not coincidentally, the Annie Hall star covered "Blue Moon" in Rob Reiner's 2014 film, And So It Goes. "Diane met my daughter when she was a year old," Holmes reveals, which makes Cruise's rendition of the classic 1934 ballad in Alone Together a sweet full-circle moment.

In a new interview with Glamour, Katie Holmes is opening up about raising daughter Suri Cruise both in and out of the spotlight. Katie and Tom – who married in November 2006 – have kept Suri relatively out of the spotlight despite their superstar status, keeping her off of their respective social media profiles. "She came out very strong – she's always been a strong personality. She'll pick an activity and work her butt off until she's really good at it.

So would Holmes and Sturgess reunite for a movie musical of their own? "I would be honored." And, of course, that film would have to include her daughter performing "Blue Moon" on-camera. Alone Together pairs Holmes with Jim Sturgess as a pair of New Yorkers who separately make the decision to flee the Big Apple at the height of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020. They both end up booking the same upstate Airbnb and, after some initial uncertainty and confusion, end up taking shelter together. Needless to say, their relationship eventually takes a romantic turn. "I'm very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent," she adds.

All excursions are led by experienced expedition teams, who provide all the equipment needed to make the most of your time in Alaska. They’ll even offer last-minute specials right up until the time of sailing, but selection will be limited and the most popular shore excursions will have long wait lists.

Deciding What Type of Room to Book:

Don't forget bug spray to ward off Alaska's prolific mosquitos, sunscreen and sunglasses for the ever-glowing midnight sun and a swimsuit for your ship's heated pool or hot tub. Bring binoculars or a zoom lens, so you can spot bears and other elusive creatures. With its intimate size and maneuverability, world-class dining, social atmosphere, and high-end amenities, Seabourn Cruises is a luxurious way to explore America’s Last Frontier. The Millennium offers Edge series staterooms with Infinite Veranda—at the touch of a button, your entire living space becomes the veranda, which means you can walk right out to the water’s edge. And 99% of the staterooms on Celebrity Edge have king-size beds, featuring Celebrity eXhale bedding and Cashmere mattresses. Royal Caribbean is known for its floating megaresorts, which carry thousands and are big on amenities, glitz and a certain amount of glamor — think flashy casinos, high-tech shows and lavish spas.

If you want a more active trip in less touristed areas, a great choice would be a small-ship expedition line, including Alaska specialists such as Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures. You'll have four sea days (for example, two days from San Francisco to Juneau) plus a day of scenic cruising at a spot like Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Endicott Arm, Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park. The waters before you enter the Inside Passage can be calm, rough or anything in between, depending on when you go. If you book a Gulf of Alaska voyage, you'll also enjoy exploring parts of the Inside Passage and its ports that could include a mix of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Ketchikan, Haines and Icy Strait Point. Popular Inside Passage ports of call include Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Haines and Skagway. Instead of taking a long and expensive flight to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can choose a cruise that sails round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver (note, you won't be able to tack on a post-cruise land trip to Denali if you do this).

When to book an Alaska cruise

We had no problem buying our tickets in the late afternoon, but earlier in the day there are usually lines. When we went, online tickets weren’t available, but I also wouldn’t recommend buying ahead of time in case the weather is bad when you get to Juneau… there’s not really a point if you can’t see anything from the top, in my opinion! There are definitely cool views from the ride but know that it’s hard to capture photos while inside the tram due to glare and how scuffed up the windows are. The Goldbelt Tram is one of the most convenient things to do in Juneau if you’re arriving via cruise, simply because it is right next to the cruise port. Once you get to the top, you barely have enough time to get photos since everyone wants the same photo. And, honestly, the view at the top is pretty mediocre compared to the views you can see elsewhere in Juneau.

Cruises at the beginning (April and May) and end (September and October) of Alaska's cruise season are generally a bit cheaper than those in June, July and August. Cruise lines are very different from each other, and there is no single “cruise passenger” type, so there is no single “Alaska cruise ship” type either. Choose this ship if your priority is to relax, and you don’t need an extensive daily schedule while cruising between ports.

Budget for shore excursions and tours

Between the gentle rocking of the ship and the Ultra Tranquility Bed, you’re sure to sleep like a baby. These solo cabins get our vote because they're located in a complex where a private lounge encourages mingling.

Alaska has become a hot spot for multigenerational family travel, with grandparents taking their kids and grandkids of all ages on a memory-making holiday. Princess Cruises is a line that offers something for everyone, and its Alaska-based Discovery Princess is our top choice for family reunion groups. If you're traveling with young kids in Alaska and want an activity- and entertainment-packed experience, make a beeline for Disney Cruise Line and its Alaska-based Disney Wonder. The ship has an extensive children's program, high-quality entertainment, and such activities as water slides and play areas. Top scenic cruising destinations in Alaska include Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Hubbard Glacier, Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Dawes Glacier at Endicott Arm and College Fjord. Sitka's Russian heritage also sets it apart from other Alaskan ports on your cruise itinerary.

The renowned travel guide site does an easy-to-digest, pros-and-cons-style summaries of all of the cruise lines. Princess has been sailing Alaska for over 50 years, and with six ships, five wilderness lodges, and its own domed rail car, this cruise line knows the region well. To prepare for all conditions, you should plan for temperatures ranging from the 40s to 70s, both on and off ship. For your on-shore day excursions, be sure to pack layers of clothing and rain gear so that you can be comfortable. Proper footwear is also important and be sure to bring hiking shoes if you plan to enjoy outdoor activities.

My one complaint is that the elevators usually took a long time and were constantly stuffed full. I’m usually a stairs girl, but with a stroller in tow, stairs just aren’t logical. Now that I’ve covered everything we did (that’s the important part of the trip to me), it’s time to cover the ship itself. Downtown Ketchikan encompasses Creek Street and offers quite a bit more to do. You can visit the Totem Heritage Center or other museums, or simply walk around exploring the shops and restaurants.

Whittier is also a convenient port for cruising College Fjord, which most northbound sailings do on the final day before arriving in Whittier. Whittier is, however, a tiny community that is little more than a deep-water port, while Seward is a larger community and regional base for a more diverse collection of tours and activities. Luckily, when it comes to Alaska cruises, there is truly something for everyone. Whether you’re traveling solo or with kids, whether you’re looking for total luxury or a bargain and whether you love giant ships or something more intimate, we’ve found the best Alaska cruises to fit your needs. See which one sounds right for you, and once you’re booked, get a head start by checking out these hidden cruise features, cruise ship code words and things you can’t do on cruises.

Whether you’re looking for an all-inclusive multi-day Alaska cruise package or simply a day cruise to see wildlife and glaciers, there are many options to choose from. Because Alaska has such a short season with a limited number of ships and is a dream trip for many, cruises are in high demand and people plan early. If you're interested in Alaska's Gold Rush history, Skagway — 90 miles northwest of Juneau — is a port you shouldn't miss.

While this guide ranks the best ships for Alaska cruise holidays by real reviews, you can’t just accept that the number one ship is the one you should book. Oceania is another cruise line to offer a range of flexible tour options, so if you want to extend your trip with a hotel stay or a land program before or after you sail, it’s easy to find some fantastic options. The six-star service is exceptional and the excursions are well put together, giving guests incredible insights into Alaska.

It’s worth noting that shoreside transportation outside of cruise line-operated transfers can be more limited in Whittier, so passengers embarking there may wish to ensure they include transfers from Anchorage in their cruise package. From Seward, travelers wanting to spend a few days exploring Kenai Fjords National Park or one of the wilderness lodges can book Alaska Railroad transfers on their regular scheduled service. Alaska has been a popular cruise destination for decades, and the industry has continued a trajectory of growth. Each summer season there seems to be another cruise line sailing Alaskan waters, while the longtime incumbents are relentless in their addition of new itineraries, amenities, and excursions.

Holland America Line’s “Alaska Up Close” deeply immerses guests in local cultures through onboard programs and activities, and shore excursions. On all of its Alaska cruises, a Huna Native Interpreter comes aboard Holland America Line ships to share the history of the Tlingit people. Holland America Line (HAL) — which recently snapped up a 2023 World’s Best Award in the large-ship ocean cruise line category — has been cruising Alaska for over 75 years. HAL prides itself on having more permits for Glacier Bay National Park visits than any other cruise line.

Cruises are typically offered in three-night, seven-night, and even up to 28-night cruises. On average, a seven-night cruise ranges from $500 to $5,000, depending on the cruise line and state room of your choice. The price typically includes all on-board expenses such as food, room, and on-ship activities.
